Everyone is born with an elemental affinity, but only certain spirits can access their elemental affinity. There are two types of elemental affinities: common affinities and spirit affinities. Elemental affinities allow mortals to easily associate and communicate with spirits of the same elemental affinity. In some cases, mortals can even command spirits with the same elemental affinity as them so long as the mortal’s spiritual power is particularly strong. Oracles use pieces of their element in order to access the spirit world. For example, an oracle whose elemental affinity is water will use a looking pool in order to access the spirit world.
Spirits, however, use their elements quite differently. Depending on the kind of spirit, an elemental affinity indicates that the spirit has some control over their element and can use it as a weapon. In order to decipher whether or not your spirit has a predisposition to control their given element, you must research your spirit. For example, yuki onna are always a water element and can control snow, ice, and can freeze water. A regular ghost cannot control their element unless their element is the reason why they died (i.e., someone with an affinity to water drowned, someone with an affinity to fire burned to death, etc.). If you are unsure what element your spirit is, please don’t hesitate to ask me!
COMMON AFFINITIES vs. SPIRIT AFFINITIES,
Common affinities are affinities that everyone is born with. Spirit affinities, however, are affinities that you are either born with in addition to your common affinity or earn over time. The five common affinities are earth, wood, metal, fire, and water. The three spirit affinities are wind, lightning, and heaven. Heaven is a special affinity reserved for gods, oracles, and chakra phoenixes. DEFAULT AFFINITIES, Some species of spirits have a set elemental affinity that is the trademark of their race. For example, a kappa will always have an affinity to water and a raijuu will always have an affinity to thunder and wind even those two are special affinities. This is because of the mating season of these creatures. A remain’s element is dependent on how their mortal form perished. A yuki onna will always have a water element because yuki onnas are the remains of mortals who froze to death. [/blockquote][/blockquote] [/style]

Those with an affinity to wood are born in the spring time. Traits associated with the wood element are affability, strength, flexibility, anger, and sensuality. People with a wood affinity feel very strongly about becoming and being parents, as they tend to love children. They get along best with those of the earth and water element, and get along the least with those of the fire and metal element. WATER,Those with an affinity to water are born in the winter. Traits associated with the water element are intelligence, wisdom, flexibility, gentleness, calmness, anxiety, and explosive anger. For the most part, people with the water element are sweet and very kind, which makes people believe that they are weak. But if you push them too far, they will overwhelm you with their anger and won’t stop until they are satisfied. They get along best with the wood, earth, and metal element. They get along least with the fire element. EARTH, Those with an affinity to earth are born during the transition periods between seasons. Traits associated with the earth element are patience, thoughtfulness, practicality, hard work, stability, self-centeredness, harmony, ambition, stubbornness, and responsibility. People with an earth affinity need to feel stable and at the center of things, and they feel most comfortable when they are in their home. They get along best with the water, fire, and wood element. They get along the least with the metal element. FIRE, Those with an affinity to fire are born during the summer. Traits associated with the fire element are dynamism, strength, persistence, restlessness, warmth, enthusiasm, creativity, aggression, impatience and impulsive behavior. People with a fire affinity can either be the kindest, happiest people you know or they can be angriest, cruelest people you know. They tend to have very quick, violent tempers and hold grudges. They are also more prone to self-destructive tendencies and extremist ideals, but they are also very passionate and only want to bring joy to the ones they love. They get along best with the earth and metal element, and they get along the least with the wood and water element. METAL, Those with an affinity to metal are born during the autumn. Traits associated with the metal element are firmness, rigidity, persistence, strength, determination, controlling, ambitious, forceful, set in their ways, self-reliant, materialistic, business-oriented, and organization. People with a metal affinity tend to be loners who submerge themselves in their work. They also tend to be very influential among their friends and family, if a bit hard to get along with. They get along the best with those of the water, fire, and earth element, and they get along the least with those of the wood element. [/blockquote] [/style]

The wind affinity is very versatile and allows its users to harness the element in many different ways.
LIGHTNING,
The lightning element is a complementary element to fire and metal, meaning that only people and spirits with an affinity to fire or metal can also have an affinity to lightning. Unlike the wind element, the lightning element is not very varied in its uses and is strictly an offensive type of element. Those with the lightning element usually have a hard time controlling its destructive powers. HEAVEN, The heaven affinity allows one to access and, depending on the individual, control parts of the spirit world and other spirits. It is an incredibly rare affinity reserved for gods, oracles, and chakra phoenixes. The heaven affinity is unlimited because those with the heaven affinity can access the abilities of other elemental affinities, even though both gods and oracles are born with a common affinity. In combat, some affinities have weaknesses and strengths against others. The affinities strengths and weaknesses are remembered by two cycles:
[li] Wood feeds Fire [/li][li] Fire creates Earth [/li][li] Earth bears Metal [/li][li] Metal carries Water [/li][li] Water nourishes Wood WEAKENING,[/li][li] Wood absorbs Water [/li][li] Water rusts Metal [/li][li] Metal breaks up Earth [/li][li] Earth smothers Fire [/li][li] Fire burns Wood. [/li][li] Wood parts Earth [/li][li] Earth absorbs Water [/li][li] Water quenches Fire [/li][li] Fire melts Metal [/li][li] Metal chops Wood[/li][/ul] The heaven affinity trumps all other elements. Lightning is strengthened by metal, water, and fire; it is weakened by earth and strong against wood and water. Wind is strengthened by water and wood, and it is weakened by metal and earth. Wind can put out fire as well as strengthen it depending on its use. [/style]
