ALIAS/NICKNAMES/TITLES:
the god of death, d-bag, the silent one (this one seems to be sarcastic), he who reigns over the shadows, mot, king of darkness who shines like gold upon the sea of chaos, the last whisper, "why? why? who would do this? why did this happen? why oh why?" THEIR STORY:
it is said that yama was the first human to die. that he became the first remain, a human spirit with nowhere to go. there was no protocol for a mortal death. no path to the afterlife. as such, yama became the being that filled that void. he died and others followed. he was their senior, their lord, the ghost of ghosts. this is the tale that the humans like to tell, but the accuracy of such a story is questionable at best. even yama has forgotten how it all happened. he thinks maybe he was once a human, and maybe a lesser spirit at one point or another, but he forgets the details of such things. all that matters in the end is that he has been and that he is now.
as lord of death yama is worshiped simply through the act of dying, and the grief over the dead. some mortals tell tales of yama the great king of the fallen, but most of his inadvertent worshipers have never heard of him. despite his position yama considers himself as more of a lesser spirit than an actual god most of the time. the only instances in which he proclaims his godliness involve instances within his own sphere of influence, death. this is not to say that he quells before the other gods, he simply does not consider himself to be on the same level as other deities. sure he'd ravage them and make puns at their expense, but he'd never consider himself their equal.
yama has existed for more years than he can count, and likely will for many more than he cares to think, and he has grown bored with the monotony of it all. the humans bore him, the gods bore him, the shrieks of the living as he burns them alive bores him... yama craves something new, something more in this meaningless cycle of existence. he leaves most of his "duties" up to his reapers and familiar vassals nowadays, while he simply wanders around, searching for something he may never find.
combat.
ABILITIES:
the dying wail.
this ability allows yama to strike fear into the hearts of mortals and spirits, through use of an inhuman shriek. his wailing can be heard across vast distances through any sort of ear coverings, even the deaf are subject to the sound of yama's screaming. the wails work their way through a creatures bones and into their soul, filling the being with terror and panic. it is sad that some men have dropped dead simply hearing yama's shriek and the knowledge that death is coming for them. sometimes yama likes to sit upon mountains and scream as loud as he can to see how many mortals will flee from nearby towns; this is usually done when he is particularly bored.
dead as winter.
to yama's great lament, he absorbs all nearby heat sources and quickly extinguishes them. this is less of a power and more of a curse. yama is constantly cold and as he approaches others their heat is drawn from their bodies and the air around them; a warning that death is coming close. as this heat is quickly extinguished yama is constantly seeking heat and warmth. originally born under the affinity of fire, yama has always loved summer and blazing heats; but now he is subjected to the constant stinging of the cold. the company of virigns and beds made of hot coals can satisfy his need for heat briefly, but such pleasures are fleeting for yama.
vassal's pledge.
yama has many lesser spirits and animal spirits bound to himself. these spirits pledge fealty to him but yama still disposes of them on a whim. some humans also pledge their worship to yama, but human hearts and minds are so fickle that they are too unreliable to be considered on level with his spirit disciples. by pledging allegiance to yama his vassals surrender their life force to him for a portion of his power, a very small portion that makes them a little stronger, faster, and cooler in general. as they have surrendered their life force to yama to do with as he sees fit. their souls become his and he will not give them back.
WEAPONRY:
yama has a scythe that is an expression of his being and dominion. while not always visible this sycthe, whose name yama will whisper only to his fallen foes as they lay dying, is always present. while more of a spiritual weapon, yama's scythe can be used to alter the physical world as well. when he was young, energetic, and virile, yama would slay hordes of men in a single arcing motion; but as of late he seems to have lost his pleasure in slaughtering innocents. the screams of dying men and wailing women have simply lost their luster and yama rarely calls upon his scythe.
